What is MAC Institute?

MAC Institute is a half-day series of educational classes designed to provide Investors, attorneys, accountants, lenders and business advisors with a greater understanding of venture capital and private equity investing and the critical issues facing their portfolio companies.

The 2010 MAC Institute

The 2010 MAC Institute will commence with a presentation focused on an overview of the current venture capital climate in the region, and will proceed with two educational tracks. The first track will focus on important issues relevant to companies seeking first time funding from angels or venture capital investors. The second track will focus on issues relevant to companies that have already obtained first time funding. The program will conclude with a networking session, cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres.

Track 1, Session 1
Typical Investor Structure: How a VC firm works

During this session, a panel comprised of venture capital investors and entrepreneurs will discuss the typical venture capital investor structure, including how a venture capital firm works, as well as the economics of venture capital investing. The panel will also discuss valuation expectations and strategies for seeking angel and venture capital financing.

Best Practices for follow on Financing

This session will focus on the key issues companies face as they look to bring new equity partners into an existing capital structure. Topics will include balancing various shareholders interests, internal vs. external rounds, facilitating communications between new and existing investors, striking the proper balance between investor interests and business interests, creative solutions for bridging divergent investor interests (including potential down rounds) and common pitfalls to avoid in multi-handed capital structures.

Prepare for Success: Meeting Your Board’s Expectations Post Funding

In this difficult economic climate, emerging technology, life science and clean tech companies face challenges obtaining venture capital financing that are unlike their predecessors. If a company successfully obtains venture capital financing, it must also deal with the new challenges that come with managing a venture-backed company in today's challenging environment, and in particular managing its new board of directors and meeting the heightened expectations that come with venture capital financing.
